McIlroy eagles into contention at BMW PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday at the BMW PGA Championship, propelling him into contention for the title. The world‑no. 2 used a 4‑iron from 230 yards to inside 2 feet and holed the eagle putt on the back‑nine, capping a birdie‑eagle finish on consecutive closing par‑5s at Wentworth Golf Club.
After the third round McIlroy is tied for sixth place on 11‑under 205, just two strokes behind the lead held by Manuel Elvira and Filippo Celli. Both leaders posted 68 and 69 respectively to reach 13‑under 205. A total of 15 players remain within three shots of the top of the leaderboard.
The field includes several players without major tour victories. Neither Elvira nor Celli has won a DP World Tour title, while two of the three tied for third – Johannes Veerman and Alejandro Del Rey – are ranked 357th and 236th globally. The other player at 12‑under is J.J. Spaun, the 2025 U.S. Open champion, who carded a 68.
McIlroy is part of a five‑man group also featuring Adam Scott (71) and Joaquin Niemann (67). “It’s going to be an interesting day,” McIlroy said of the final round. “There’s a lot of people around the lead. I think the conditions the last couple of days, that’s the reason it hasn’t let anyone get away from the pack just because it has played so tricky and difficult.”
Second‑round leader Ryan Gerard fell back with a 3‑over 75, while other contenders made strides. McIlroy, who won the DP World Tour’s flagship event in 2014 alongside The Open Championship and PGA Championship that summer, feels he has given himself a solid chance tomorrow.
